It was very nice to see you in person at the residency.

This Week In SUE & the July Residency

By | Email Alerts | No Comments

Hi SUE People!

Our summer break is over and I’m looking forward to seeing you all in person at the Residency!

Here’s what’s up in SUE over the next 2 weeks:

  • We’ve start our Food Module this week, and, as usual, your readings and videos are all on the course site.
  • Your blog posts are due on Tuesday, July 21, and comments Thursday, July 23 (first day of the residency)
  • Please fill out the Sustainable Urban Economies Project Form and bring your completed form to the Residency.

Here is what is planned in the SUE class at the Residency:

  • Our two class sessions will be on Thursday, July 23, 10-1 and Sunday, July 26, 11-1.
  • Thursday’s session has been revised to be in greater alignment with the Residency’s theme about mobility, bikes, and equity.  Towards those ends, we will be meeting with folks from the Echo Park Film Center who will be pulling up to our Residency with their Filmmobile.
  • Sunday’s session is designed to make sure that you leave the residency with a good start choosing both the topic of your final project and the form in which it will be delivered (business model, campaign strategy, or policy analysis paper).

Welcome back.

Tony Romano recording

Hi SUE People

Here is the link to a recording of our session with Tony Romano.

http://antioch.adobeconnect.com/p3eoveuu8o6/

Unfortunately, it didn’t occur to me to record it until after he had almost completed his his brilliant summary/definition of the right to the city.  I hope it is indelibly imprinted in your minds, or that perhaps one of you has notes to share.

But if that is not the case, and if it is important to you, I will ask him to write it down.

Let me know.

Dear SUE people

This is just a reminder that our Housing module Adobe Connect session is tomorrow, Tuesday, June 23 @ 7 PM.

Same url and phone line as usual:

http://antioch.adobeconnect.com/economy/

log in as a guest and simply enter your name in the space provided. (it helps if you do this a little before 10 pm in case you have to download a little applet)

Here is the dial-in number and code:
Phone number: 866-453-5550
Code:  8050439#

Our guest for this session is Tony Romano, Organizing Director, Right to the City Alliance.

Because Tony lives in Atlanta, where it is 3 hours later, we’ll start our session in conversation with him (I’ll start it off, talk-show style, and then open it up to your questions).  We can save any check-ins and questions about the course, what’s up next, etc. for after Tony leaves us.

Pruitt-Igoe Myth Alternative….

By | Email Alerts | No Comments

Hi Sue People

The Pruitt Igoe myth video (as Caroline so kindly pointed out) has basically been disappeared from all sources (including paid sources).  I have no idea why.

So I removed it from the Housing Module “Watch” list.

Here is an alternative (which can also serve as an alternative to “My Brooklyn”) a panel discussion about gentrification that occurred last night at the L.A. Museum of Contemporary Art (and which included yours truly):

http://www.zocalopublicsquare.org/2015/06/17/gentrification-isnt-about-hipsters/events/the-takeaway/

There’s an article that summarizes the discussion, a video of the panel, and a podcast — so choose your poison.

What is more interesting than the panel itself was that the room was packed, the overflow room was packed, and 500 people were on the waiting list to get in.  So I think they got the answer to their question, the title of the panel, Is Gentrification L.A.’s Next Defining Issue?

maybe…

This Week in SUE

By | Email Alerts | No Comments

Hi SUE People

Just to keep close and in touch, here is what is happening this week in SUE:

1. We are beginning a series on basic human needs [food, clothing, and shelter] starting with this week’s module on Housing. Sub-themes in this module include tenant rights, gentrification, displacement, “vulture” capital, and policies and strategies that support the right to housing.
2. In addition to the readings and videos, your assignment for this module is to write a 750 word blog post and to comment on those of your peers.
3. Our discussion will involve a guest from the Right to the City Alliance and will occur on Tuesday, June 23, at 7 PM on Adobe Connect.

Looking forward to your posts and that conversation.

Gilda
